What is Sports Massage?

Dating back to the 19th Century Sports Massage therapy is a massage technique designed to prepare muscles for sporting events and help muscles recover post-sporting events.  Originally Sports massage was aimed at athletes, but you don't have to be an Olympian to benefit from a sports massage.

Sports Massages can help anyone to optimise their muscle health, relieve stress and tension and facilitate the removal of built-up toxins within the muscle.

What to expect

Before the massage begins, you will be asked to remove your outer clothing garments. Clients are advised to wear suitable underwear.

Once you are laid on the massage table, depending on which area of the body is being treated first, you will be covered with a large towel, keeping you comfortable throughout the massage.

Once the massage begins, your therapist will apply massage oil and start the pre-massage; this part of the treatment uses Effleurage, which means to "flow or glide." The effleurage technique prepares the muscles for more profound, specific work.

After the warm-up massage, the treatment will incorporate several techniques. One such technique is Petrissage, which means to "knead the tissues", which helps to mobilise muscles and reduce muscular tension.

Initial Consultation

At your initial consultation, your sports massage therapist will go through various assessments to observe posture, flexibility and mobility.

The assessment will also include a short questionnaire which will cover topics such as existing health conditions, past and present injuries, whether you are taking medication and your current level of fitness/how often you exercise. The information taken will assist in ensuring the appropriate treatment.

Post-Massage Care Tips

After receiving a massage, it's essential to prioritise self-care to maximize the benefits and ensure a smooth recovery. First and foremost, hydration is key; drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins released during the massage and rehydrates muscles, reducing soreness. Avoiding strenuous activities for at least 24 hours allows the body to heal and prevents potential strain. It's also common to experience heightened emotions or sensitivity after a massage, so taking time to relax and perhaps even meditate can be beneficial. Warm baths, preferably with Epsom salts, can further soothe muscles and promote relaxation. You'll also want to pay attention to your body's signals. If certain areas feel particularly tender, you ought to apply ice or a cold compress to reduce inflammation. Remember, every individual's response to a massage is unique, so it's crucial to listen to your body and give it the care it needs.

Goals

When we make positive lifestyle changes, sustainable results will be achieved. We go where our vision is.

Nutrition with Sports Massage

When it comes to sports performance and recovery, the synergy between nutrition and sports massage cannot be overstated. Proper nutrition fuels the body, providing the energy and essential nutrients required for muscle function, repair, and growth. When combined with sports massage, the benefits are amplified. Massage increases circulation, facilitating the efficient delivery of these vital nutrients to muscle tissues, accelerating recovery.

Post-massage, it's beneficial to consume protein-rich foods or supplements to support muscle repair and anti-inflammatory foods like berries or omega-3 fatty acids to reduce muscle soreness. Additionally, staying hydrated before and after a massage is crucial. Water aids in flushing out toxins released during the massage and rehydrates muscles, further reducing the risk of cramps and stiffness. Together, a balanced diet and regular sports massage create a holistic approach to athletic wellness, optimising performance and recovery.
